I also love helping my kids with their fitness and performance goals. Because I workout, I am able to give them the opportunity to see how fun a healthy fit mom can be! The active memories I have with the people I love are priceless.
Before kids I was a full-time Massage Therapist. Now I massage a little less and do school at home with our two amazing kids Elijah (12), and Naomi (9). Occupation: Lead Learner.
I have always considered the great out of doors to be my open gym. I have found trail running, mountain/road biking, rock climbing, backpacking and more recently paddle boarding to be such amazing ways to stay fit! But my love for running and biking, specifically, left me with some muscular imbalances that started to cause chronic pain in my left knee. I didn’t know a thing about lifting, but my good friend Nicola, who had been a member at Farmgirlfit for about a year, encouraged me to join her for a month to see if it would help.
When Nicola first invited me to join her at FGF, I was nervous about joining a gym. All the weights really intimidated me, and it seemed like I would never be able to string together the movements required to properly lift a bar over my head! It was the team of experienced coaches that won me over with their step-by-step instruction and constant encouragement. Everyone is so friendly, and it is inspiring to see women of different ages, and at different levels encourage each other with enthusiasm. One month has now turned into 3 years!
My goal from day one has been to build physical fitness into my upper body, and to overcome the idea that “I am not a gym girl”. I can now lift a bar with plates over my head, and can identify almost everything the coach instructs us to do with it!
The fast-paced life of a soccer mom, and the dedication to schooling at home has made getting outside more challenging. My goal after taking the running clinic last month is to start back at square one, and build myself a good running base again. Also, as I get older I realize the importance of prioritizing yoga and body movement.
Favorite: I actually like plate pushes, and I get excited anytime I get a bar with plates over my head.
Least favorite: Wall balls and rowing.
The community!! Those 6:30am workouts for me begin by simply getting out of bed, and the thought of working out with such an amazing group of women keeps me faithful. I’d love to say that it’s easy for me to make time for myself, but the truth is, I often feel like I am sacrificing sleep or other responsibilities to get my workout in, even at that hour! Because of the community, I always leave the gym feeling more alive and encouraged, and thankful I made the effort!
Because I regularly workout at the gym, I am able to jump on my bike, or run up the mountain, and perform at a pace and intensity that still meets my competitive needs, even though I don’t have the freedom to be as active as often as I’d like. I also love helping my kids with their fitness and performance goals. Because I workout, I am able to give them the opportunity to see how fun a healthy fit mom can be! The active memories I have with the people I love are priceless.
Learning with my kids and tutoring other students, adventuring with my family, supporting soccer dreams, and spending time leading the Jr. High girls at my church are all different ways I choose to spend my time outside of the gym.
My husband always inspires and encourages me to make time for the activities I love. He is my biggest inspiration.
The start of any new adventure!
